TKA Emergency Procedures

TKA's General Emergency Response Options

The King’s Academy has developed a comprehensive set of General Emergency Response Options that covers a wide variety of emergencies, and serves as a guide to help staff respond swiftly, should a crisis occur at our school.

In the event of a real or potential threat to the school, either on or nearby the campus, The King’s Academy staff will act by initiating a Lock Down or Shelter-in-Place response, according to the level of threat.  In most cases, the intent of our response will be to protect staff and students by keeping them sheltered indoors.  Our first reaction is NOT to evacuate the school, or to allow students to leave campus.

Lockdown

Lockdown is initiated when there is either a direct threat to TKA persons on the TKA campus, or the official public safety authority informs TKA to initiate a lockdown procedure.  TKA’s responses will generally include the following:

  1. Inform students and teachers of code designation throughout campus, whereby school doors are immediately locked, and staff/students remain indoors.
  2. Staff/Students are expected to immediately begin screening off their classroom/office windows, turning off lights, and building safety barricades at all entry points.
  3. At the soonest opportunity, and with authorization from the official public safety authority, TKA informs families about the ongoing situation as soon as updates are available.
  4. TKA remains in Lockdown status until all students/staff have been safely evacuated or  the official public safety authority issues an “all clear” communication, indicating the school is free to return to normal operations.

Shelter-In-Place

Shelter-in-Place is initiated when the official public safety authority informs The King’s Academy that there may be a potential threat to TKA persons or property within the vicinity of the school campus.  TKA’s responses will generally include the following:

  1. Inform students and teachers of code designation throughout campus, whereby school doors are immediately locked, and staff/students remain indoors.
  2. Secure all campus gates, with staff overseeing those points of entry/exit.
  3. TKA informs families about the ongoing situation as soon as updates are available.
  4. TKA remains in Shelter-in-Place status until the official public safety authority issues an “all clear” communication, indicating the school is free to return to normal operations.

Parent/Guardian Response

While our ultimate goal in response to a threat is to safely reunite students with their families, our primary goal remains the immediate safety of all persons involved.  Parents, guardians, and family members can help the MOST, in pursuit of these goals, by responding in the following ways:

1.      DO NOT COME TO CAMPUS.  If there is a threat on/near campus, i.e. if the school is placed in a Lockdown or Shelter-in-Place status, extra persons in the vicinity will not deter or diminish the threat, but may only exacerbate the situation and divert critical safety/emergency resources away from where it is needed most.  PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE TKA CAMPUS.

2.      KEEP SCHOOL TELEPHONE LINES CLEAR.  If the situation on campus demands unhindered, immediate communication with safety/emergency personnel, this cannot be accomplished when off-campus callers are attempting to get more information about the situation by calling the school.  Rest assured that TKA would make every effort to communicate the details of a threatening situation at each appropriate opportunity.  PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL.

3.      CHECK EMAIL ACCOUNTS OR THE TKA WEBSITE HOMEPAGE FOR MESSAGES FROM TKA.  When the situation permits, TKA will make every effort communicate the details of any threatening situation, and what steps families might need to take in order to expedite achieving the ultimate goal of safely reuniting students with families.  Checking email or TKA's homepage will be the fastest way to get the most accurate information.

At the conclusion of either a Lockdown or Shelter-in-Place situation, TKA families can expect to be notified about any changes to normal school release times or after school activities.  Also, please remember that A STUDENT CAN ONLY BE RELEASED TO AN ADULT WHO IS DOCUMENTED AS AN EMERGENCY CONTACT.  For the safety of your student, please ensure your family’s emergency contact information is kept up to date through the Parent Portal homepage "Family Update Link."  If any student or family emergency/contact information changes, update the "Family Contact/Medical Information" through the link in the Parent Portal as soon as possible—the safety of your child may depend on it!
