The King’s Academy Drama Department presents three large scale shows each year including two plays and one musical. The audition process for the plays and the musical is different. Unfortunately, due to the expanding numbers of the Drama program, we can no longer guarantee every student who auditions a role in any of our three shows.
Musical Audition Process
Auditions for the musical are open to all TKA students and TKA ISP students 6th-12th grade. There is a $100 audition fee that is only returned if a student is not cast in the production.
Students are asked to prepare a short song to sing, from a musical, for the audition process. At this initial audition, the students sing their song for the director, and vocal director. It is also at this initial audition, that the students learn a short dance. Based on their performance at the audition, students are either called back to audition again, or are asked to wait for the posting of the cast list. Students who are not called back may still be cast in the musical.
Before the callbacks (i.e. second auditions) students are given sheet music, and usually a scene to read, both from the show. At the callbacks, students are often asked to sing for several different roles, and to read (i.e. act) for several different roles. Based on the importance of dance in the production, students may be asked to dance again at the callbacks. There are often three days of callbacks. One day specifically for girls, one day for boys, and a final day to narrow down the selection process. Within a few days, a cast list is posted. There are always two casts, not only so that more students have opportunities to play featured roles, but also because this acts as a built-in understudy system.
Play Audition Process
Auditions for the two plays are open to all TKA students and TKA ISP students 6th-12th grade. There is a $50 audition fee that is only returned if a student is not cast in the production.
Students who wish to audition for one of the plays are expected to prepare a short (approx. 1 minute) monologue and will be asked to read scenes from the script. After the initial audition, students will either be asked to come to callbacks (i.e. second auditions) or are asked to wait for the posting of the cast list. Students who are not called back may still be cast in the play; it simply means the director has seen enough to know where to cast them.
