TKA Sevenstar Online Course
TKA students may take certain courses for remediation online with Sevenstar. The online courses are UC approved and are taught by Christian teachers through the online education organization. The Sevenstar courses are asynchronous, meaning there is no live teacher instruction. Each week a series of assignments are due. Students must complete the assignments on their own. The course instructor is available for questions via email or a phone call can be scheduled. The Sevenstar course instructor is not a TKA employee.
Requirements:
- Students may remediate one semester or the entire year of a course in which they received a D or an F.
- Geometry is the only course that may be taken for advancement.
- Applicant's current teacher will be consulted regarding approval for him/her to take the online class.
- Classes are for high school students only. Courses taken by junior high students will not be recognized for credit and will not be listed on a student's transcripts.

The King’s Academy Homework Club Presents
Junior High Math Essentials: Summer Review and Enrichment Tutoring Program
Junior High Math Essentials is designed as a fun, hands-on, interactive refresher course on the foundational math skills necessary to be ultimately successful in their junior high math class. In a small group, students will receive personalized attention and tutoring to meet their specific learning needs in order to be prepared for their next level of math.
Small tutoring groups* for this program will be based on your student’s recent completion (2023-2024) of TKA benchmark tests for the following math levels:

Cooking: Around the World Quintessential Cuisine
- Teacher: Cora Bell

Explore the different quintessential cuisine from 5 countries that Mrs. Bell has visited in her lifetime and cook and prepare their most popular dishes in these parts of the world. After the week-long session, you will become familiar with the culture and turn into a food enthusiast! Students will learn knife skills, kitchen safety, and the different cooking methods that these countries use to prepare their food. Sign up and enjoy this culinary experience!
Cora Bell has a degree in Home Economics and has extensive knowledge in the food industry. She loves to explore different cultures through food. She also believes that whether it’s trying new foods or cooking together, food brings people closer together through shared experiences.
Dance Workshop

Stay active and have fun this summer with dance. This course will cover five different styles of dance, including Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Acrobatics suitable for any beginner or intermediate level dancer. Students will be able to learn the foundation of each dance style through skill training, learning choreography, learning dance vocabulary, and playing dance games. This dance training will also help to build strength, flexibility, and musicality skills. Students will get the chance to be a part of their own mini summer showcase by learning routines and even creating their own costumes. On the last day of camp parents are invited at the end to come see everything they have learned and watch the dance show!
Erika Alvarez is a professional dancer with 10+ years of dance training in hip hop, ballet, jazz, contemporary, acrobatics, and tap. She is now sharing her passion with her students and has 2.5 years of teaching experience.
Blogging & Podcasting

Many people write blogs and have podcasts to share information, connect with others about specific issues, and advertise. This class equips you with journalistic and expository writing skills so you can write a variety of blog posts and create podcasts. You will learn how to post your writing on a blog site and embed images, links, videos, and audio using Edublogs. By the end of the class, you can share your blog with family and friends and maybe go on to make your own blog or podcast!
Leanne Lopes currently teaches 8th and 9th grade English and has been teaching for 10 years. She has a B.A. in English from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and three teaching credentials (English, Social Science, and K-12 Multiple Subject). She enjoys going on hikes, spending time with her family, and regularly visiting See’s Candies.
Freshman Success

This course will help make the transition from middle to high school smoother. An essential component of this program is community-building and assisting students to build relationships with one another. Students will polish their study and organizational management skills to help them be well-prepared for high school rigor. Plus, they will learn technology tools that make staying on top of assignments and studying more effective and efficient. Students will also be introduced to TKA's writing requirements for the humanities and sciences. The program will be one week for a half-day (4 hours) and will be offered two times during the summer. For students new to TKA, there will be an additional hour each day to acquaint them with details about TKA's schedule, culture, campus, and more.
Stephanie Wetzel is an experienced English and Bible teacher holding an ACSI credential. She has an AA in Psychology and a BA in Bible & Theology with a minor in Education from William Jessup University. She has been teaching 9th grade at TKA since 2005.
Musical Theater Workshop

This course was designed for the Musical Theater lover! We will be workshopping scenes and songs from musicals that have been both performed on stage and in movies. Students will collaborate with the instructor to select solos, duets and ensemble songs. The class will include voice technique, dance, improv and musical theater history. No experience necessary–just a love for musical theater!
Krissy Weston has worn many hats in many theaters throughout the US as a performer, choreographer, and vocal director. Favorite roles include Mary Poppins (SVP Musical theater Program, LA), Belle in Beauty and the Beast(Humboldt Light Opera Company) Maria in West Side Story (Stockton Private Industry Counsel) Dulcie in The Boyfriend (Delta College) and Jemima in Cats! (West Valley Light Opera). She trains regularly to keep up with the latest vocal science. She vocal directs children’s theater throughout the Bay Area, is an audition coach, piano teacher and voice teacher. She works with musical theater students of all levels, helping them define and reach their academic and career goals. She has her BA in acting and is completing a masters in drama therapy. She has been the vocal director for the musicals at TKA since 2018.
Introduction to Graphic Design

In this class, students will learn the basics of graphic design and its importance in the digital age through learning CS6 Photoshop. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on projects, and interactive lessons, students will learn the fundamentals of graphic design, including layout, typography, color theory, and design principles. Students will walk away from this class with a new understanding of color design and its impact on the viewer as well as the confidence to use what they learned to continue to create visually appealing designs.
Joshua Knoxville is an experienced artist and animator—achieving special recognition in comic book illustrations during his years in college. While his BA and MA degrees are in Biblical Theology, he has a strong skill set in traditional drawing, painting, graphic design, and cartoon animation. Originally planning to work at Pixar, Joshua transitioned his career to ministry to teach about Christ.
Fairy Tales & Legends: An Adventure in Writing

Once upon a time, a fellowship of students took a week-long journey through the exciting world of fairy tales and American folklore! This is your call to adventure in reading and writing! If you embark on this quest with us, you will read stories from around the world, examining their history, timeless themes, and cultural significance. You will also develop your skills as a storyteller by creating original fairy tales and legends through drama, art, and writing. Do not refuse the call and join us in this class as we embark on the greatest adventure you will have this summer all while staying in one place.
Alina Hamm has a CA teaching credential as well as a Masters degree in Education. She loves to get lost in a great book and if there is any tie to fairy tales or folklore, she might be there for a very long time.
Life and Job Skills

Are your pockets empty? Are all of your friends going out on Friday night, but you’re home watching Netflix with your mom because you don’t have any money? You need a summer job! Does that seem overwhelming? You want a job but you don’t know where to begin? If this sounds like you, then you won’t want to miss this week-long course! In this class you will learn about different summer jobs, how to find job opportunities, as well as how to fill out an application and how to conduct yourself in an interview. Additionally, you will learn other skills that will help you in all aspects of life. Start your summer off by gaining the skills you need to walk confidently into a job interview and walk out with a job so that you can have the financial means to have a great summer!
Jordan Coss served for 10 years as a pastor in churches in Georgia and California. Part of that time was serving in the role of youth pastor and helping students learn life and job skills before sending them off to college after graduation. He has been teaching for the past 3 years. He has a B.A. in Bible and M.A. in New Testament from Freed Hardeman University, an MDiv from Harding School of Theology, and is currently finishing up a Doctorate of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary
Introduction to Art

Algebra Essentials

- Cost: $900
This three week-long course is designed to empower students with a strong foundation in algebraic concepts. The class will focus on reviewing fundamental Algebra skills that will be necessary to be successful in Algebra 1. Some topics that will be covered are multi-step equations, working with fractions, systems of equations, linear and quadratic functions and their graphs and equations. Some portions of the course will be individualized to the students’ specific needs based on their last math class and/or their TKA math placement test. The goal is to enhance students’ understanding of concepts they will need to be confident and successful in their Algebra 1 class in the fall.
Taryn Durbin is the Algebra 1 and 2 teacher at The King’s Academy. She has over 15 years of experience teaching mathematics, with a major focus on Algebra. She has a degree in Mathematics and a Masters in Education. Her passion is helping her students understand and learn the fundamentals of Algebra to prepare for all future mathematics courses. She also loves to spend time with her family each summer going to the lake and paddle boarding and boating.
Brian Robinson has a CA teaching credential as well as a Juris Doctor, (law degree). He enjoys showing students clear and organized methods for solving math problems. He is also a TKA swim coach.
The Wonderful World of Theatre

In this fun and interactive enrichment course, students will develop skills in singing, dancing, and acting, as well as learning about theater production skills like set design, costuming, and theater tech. The course will conclude with a student presentation for family and friends.
Steven Brown is the Founder of Chrysalis Arts Ministries, and has been involved in the youth theater field in the Bay Area since graduating from King's through the PSP program over 12 years ago. He has extensive experience in most areas of theater production, including performing, directing, producing, costuming, designing and building sets, and theater tech.
Walt Disney History

In this Summer Enrichment course, students will explore the life, work, and legacy of Walt Disney, and how his contributions impacted the world during his lifetime (1901-1966), alongside the history of the world during that period, including the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War. Students will learn about Disney's early career in animation, the creation of Disneyland, and the development of his multimedia empire. Through lectures, discussions, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities, students will gain an appreciation for Disney's legacy, examining how his work continues to influence contemporary culture and entertainment. On the last day of the course, students, parents, and teachers will visit The Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio in San Francisco, where they will see artifacts from Walt’s life and the Walt Disney Company. By the end of the course, students will have developed critical thinking skills and a historical perspective that can be applied to other areas of study.
Christopher Schoppet-Panzarini is the 7th Grade World History teacher now but he used to work for The Walt Disney Company. He has his Duck-torate from Disney University. He’s also been to Disneyland over a hundred times in his lifetime.
Python Basics

The Python Basics with Tracy the Turtle course teaches students the basics of programming in Python. Tracy is a turtle that lives in a grid world and can be instructed to draw graphics on the canvas. Students learn Python commands, functions, control structures, and user interaction by solving puzzles and writing creative programs for Tracy to follow.
Shirley Tseng worked in the tech industry as a software engineer for 15 years before coming to teach at TKA. She has just finished her first year at TKA and loves being able to help students learn and gain interest in technology.
Junior High Writing Mastery

This course is designed to help students hone their writing skills by teaching them to produce high-quality writing. A wide range of writing essentials, including grammar, syntax, sentence structure, paragraph development, and essay structure will be taught. Additionally, they will learn the importance of editing and revising, including the strategies for proofreading and refining their work. Through interactive and practical activities, students will develop thinking skills by practicing different types of writing, including informative, descriptive, and persuasive. By the end of the course, students will have improved their writing as well as increased their confidence in their writing abilities.
Tanya Terry is a mathematics teacher at TKA and holds a bachelors in Psychology, a Masters in Clinical Psychology and a Masters in Teaching. She has taught many subjects in the past, to include writing to grade levels 7 through 11. Prior to teaching, she was co-author on three articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, a contributing writer and editor on a federally-funded medical research grant, and editor for the monthly newsletter of a medical research center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
High School Writing Essentials

This course is designed to help students hone their writing skills by teaching them to read and write analytically. This course will focus on analyzing arguments in order to think critically, and then use this knowledge to write analytically. We will focus on academic writing from the ground up, including brainstorming, planning, writing, revising, and editing. By the end of this course, students will have improved their skills and readiness in reading and writing so they can be confident in their high school coursework.
Steve Vermouth is a co-lead of the English Department and has been teaching high school English at all levels for a decade. Prior to that, he taught the Freshman writing courses at a university and community college, so he has a thorough knowledge of writing expectations and challenges. He has a Masters degree in English Literature, and likes to spend his free time reading library books to his three children.

Sign up for this fun class, and go home everyday with food to share with your family and friends! During the week you will learn the basics of cooking and baking through a combination of hands-on instruction, interactive lessons, and recipe exploration. Students will learn the essential kitchen skills such as knife techniques, cooking methods, and kitchen safety. By the end of the week, your mom won’t ever need to cook dinner again because you will be the new family chef!
Tanya Rollins loves to be in the kitchen! She has been cooking and baking for over 30 years, including 2 summers at Steve & Kate’s Camp and 9 years working in the Knight’s Cafe’.
Introduction to Photography*

In this class, students will be introduced to fundamental principles and techniques of SLR photography in the digital format. Students will utilize elements of visual design and composition to develop an “eye” for evaluating and creating images. Students will use camera equipment to gain a working knowledge of manual technical exposure control techniques, ideally being able to use digital SLR cameras proficiently at the end of the course. In addition, students will become familiar with basic editing and management of photographic images utilizing editing programs such Lightroom or other basic editing tools.

A long-time gamer, collector of board games, and a seasoned game master, Mr. Schoppet-Panzarini is the host of TKA's Dungeons & Dragons Club during the school year.
JavaScript Basics

The CodeHS Introduction to Programming with Karel the Dog course teaches students the basics of programming by giving commands to a computer just like you give commands to a dog. Karel is a dog that lives in a grid world and can be instructed to move around and pick up and put down tennis balls. Students will learn JavaScript commands by solving puzzles and writing creative programs for Karel to follow.

Beginner’s French Musical Adventures

Laura Denis is a substitute teacher at the King's Academy, and was born and raised in Paris, France. She is passionate about sharing her culture through her native language, while weaving in her other passion for music, for which she obtained a B.A. in Commercial Music from Biola University.

Attention Aspiring Young Scientists! Chemistry for Kids an engaging and interactive summer course designed to introduce students to the fascinating world of chemistry. The course is tailored for kids aged 8 to 12 years old who are curious about the scientific principles governing the world around them. Students will explore fundamental concepts of chemistry in a fun and accessible manner, learning about atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds. There will be safe hands-on chemistry experiments that will be applicable to the real world such as cooking, environmental conversation and fun with polymers.
Angi K. Deng is a credentialed Science teacher with a BS degree in Chemistry and a Master's degree in Education. She has taught High School Chemistry for over 10 years and has experience working in a microbiology lab. Ms. Deng is a food and cat enthusiast. Her favorite restaurant is Atelier Crenn in San Francisco and she has a 5 year old cat named Didi.

This is a beginner level class that is for students that have no experience or those just getting started, but have had no formal training. In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of music like reading notes and rhythms, the notes on the guitar, strumming chords, and playing melodies. Each day will involve an interactive lesson and time to practice.
Sarah Supp has fond memories of growing up in a family of musicians with her mother playing piano and her father playing guitar. She has assisted her father's guitar classes for 5 years.

This is a course that introduces students to game design and programming. Students use the p5play JavaScript library in order to design, develop, and publish games. Throughout the course, students learn about major programming topics like variables, functions, conditionals, and mouse/keyboard events while building fun and interactive games that they can play and share with others.
Shirley Tseng worked in the tech industry as a software engineer for 15 years before coming to teach at TKA. She has just finished her first year at TKA and loves being able to help students learn and gain interest in technology.
TKA 101: Jumping into Junior High

Welcome to Junior High! In this intro course to being a sixth-grader here at TKA, students will learn all about campus life, classes and schedules, and make some early friends heading into their first year of middle school. Topics covered will include binder setup and organization, campus locations of classes and need-to-know spots, team bonding games for social interactions, how to take notes and stay organized, basic writing skills and organization tips from school to home. Come ready to get set up for the first day of school and beyond!
Jason Peevyhouse has been a sixth-grade teacher for 17 years, 9 of them at The King’s Academy. He holds a BA from San Jose State in the Creative Arts field and enjoys teaching middle school, going on hikes in the Bay Area with his family, and playing board games.
KJ Kingsolver has a bachelor’s degree in History. This year will be his 6th year of teaching. In his spare time, he likes to play video games, watch movies, and hang out with his wife and friends.
Rev Up Your Writing

This week-long course is designed to help students catch up and enhance their writing skills to the sixth grade level expected at TKA. Students will be introduced to brainstorming techniques that will guide them in writing literary analysis essays. This will allow students to break apart their writing projects into manageable pieces and find a place to start writing down their thoughts. Throughout the week, the students will be reviewing grammar and punctuation skills as well as adding on to what they have learned in previous years to enhance their writing. By the end of this course, students will have improved their brainstorming skills and conventions within writing to prepare them for sixth grade.
Priscilla Min is an IL credentialled English teacher with a bachelor's degree in both English Literature and Secondary Education. She is a TKA alum and considers it a blessing to come back to the school where her teachers inspired her to become a teacher. Her favorite pastime activity is reading and having been a student athlete through college, she enjoys swimming and working out while listening to audiobooks.

Volleyball
- When:
- Session 1: June 17-21, 12:30-4:00 with Coach Laura Huff
- Session 2: July 15-19, 12:30-3:30 with Coach Brian Posadas
- Who: Students entering 6th-9th grade
- Cost: $400
This camp is perfect for junior high players wanting to improve their volleyball skills, and also for 8th graders looking to try-out for their team this upcoming school year. Passing, setting, hitting, blocking, and serving will be covered, with 1-2 skills per day being taught and focused on. We will end each day with scrimmages or game variations, and the last day of camp will feature fun skills contests and ice cream for everyone!

Coach Laura Huff is the current TKA junior high boys coach with over 25 years of experience. She has coached all grades and skill levels, from beginners to varsity players, and is excited to have you join her experienced staff and have some fun!
Coach Brian Posadas has been coaching girls and boys high school and club volleyball for 13 years. Most recently he coached TKA's freshman girls and JV boys volleyball and Eclipse Volleyball Club. He trains players year round and is also currently coaching at Panda Volleyball club for the 14's and 15's age group. He is extremely passionate about teaching all skills of the game, teaching how to be a better teammate and growing the sport of volleyball. He wants to provide an opportunity for students in middle school and students entering 9th grade to experience great coaching from our staff and a fun learning experience to get them ready for their next volleyball team!

Coach Cameron Bradford is now in his fifth year as varsity boy's head coach, Coach has led his teams to four straight CCS Playoff appearances, with a CCS final and semi-final and TKA's 2023 Boys' Basketball Division IV CCS Championship to his resume.

This camp is perfect for junior high players wanting to improve their fundamental tennis skills: how to serve, hold the racquet, score and the rules of tennis. Most importantly they will learn tennis etiquette and good sportsmanship while playing. will be covered. Campers will participate in a variety of drills, games, and competitions that focus on developing their tennis fundamentals while having fun and making new friends!

Coach Maribel Trees has been playing tennis for 40 years, is a ranked junior player, USTA current player and captain of teams for the past 15 years. She has coached high school tennis for Mitty, Notre Dame, Belmont, and TKA tennis for both boys and girls for 2 years. Additionally, she coached junior high girls and boys basketball and tennis at Resurrection in Sunnyvale.

This camp is meant to be training especially for those who plan to compete in speech and debate during the academic school year with The King's Academy Speech and Debate Team, so preference will be given to those students. The week will be filled with working on public speaking, fundamentals of debate, research and evidence analysis, cross-examination skills, and even having our own mini-debate tournament.
Edwin Lin has been a debate coach at The King’s Academy since 2018 and has previously coached policy debate for many years at Leland High School. As a Leland alumnus, he also competed in policy debate, reaching high achievements at both the state and national levels. Edwin attended UC Berkeley for undergrad and grad school, and now teaches there as a lecturer in the Sociology Department.
