CURRENT INFORMATION

Spirit Week 2013:  Fun, Exciting, Unifying!   Cheers to all our students for a week characterized by spirited fun, class bonding, and school unity.  Congratulations  to the SENIORS, Class of 2013, who claimed the 1st place trophy, followed by the SOPHOMORES in 2nd place, and JUNIORS in 3rd place.  Check out this sample of Spirit Week photos!

Re-Enrollment 2013-2014:   Online Re-Enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year is now open through Friday, February 15. Please log in to your Parent Portal and locate the "Alerts" section on the right side of the portal homepage for the link to begin the online re-enrollment process. Here are the items necessary to complete your student’s Re-Enrollment:

1)    Update Household Profile – must be reviewed online through parent portal.

2)    Submit Enrollment Contractsmust be signed online only after item #1 is completed.

3)    Pay Re-Enrollment Fee – $200 per student either by submitting a check to the Business Office or paying online with a credit card.

2013-2014 Course Selection:  The deadline to complete the online process and turn in the hard-copy course selection sheet is March 1.  Students received materials during the week of February 4-8 and should follow the hard-copy sheet carefully for full instructions.  The online process is available only through the Student Portal, not the Parent Portal.  If students need to make a change to their online selections, they may go back into the portal as many times as needed up until March 1, as long as they also change the hard-copy sheet to match what is selected online.  . Students needing guidance with their choices may make an appointment with the Counseling Office for grades 9-12 or with the Registrar’s Office for grades 6-8.

Please Stop.  Recently, we had a contractor on campus who was struck by a vehicle being operated by an adult driver who was texting while driving.  Fortunately, the contractor was not seriously injured, but a smaller student may not have been so alert, or so fortunate.  Please do not text or call while driving at all, and especially while on the TKA campus.

Drop-off and Pick-up Hours at TKA:  Parents, we are first and foremost concerned with the safety of your students To that end, we are seeing an increasing number of students dropped off too early and picked up too late.  Please review the following guidelines and make the necessary transportation arrangements.

TKA Financial Assistance for Current Families: During this enrollment season, we have become aware that several TKA families are struggling to stay at TKA due to finances.  Years ago, TKA established The Bridge Fund for families who have been at TKA for a few years but need some financial assistance to be able to stay at TKA.  These are often single-parent families, families experiencing unemployment or medical conditions. We need to raise more money to help the families in need.  If it is on your heart to assist families financially, please send your check (payable to The King’s Academy) to the Business Office, and mark “Bridge Fund” or on the memo line.  Any contribution amount is greatly appreciated.

Receive a $500 Tuition Referral Credit for Referring a 6th or 7th Grade Applicant:  You are our best advertising!  To thank you for your support, you can receive a $500 credit towards tuition, a class trip, or service trip during the 2013-2014 school year for referring an applicant to our 6th or 7th grade  In order to receive the credit, the applicant must have submitted a complete application, which includes turning in all references and completing the testing process.  Tuition credits will be awarded completed applications submitted by August 1, 2013Please let Michele Duncan, Admissions Director, know if you have referred a 6th or 7th grade family during this timeframe by emailing michele.duncan@tka.org

The Yearbook Staff Needs Your Pictures!  Do you participate in a sport outside of TKA that isn’t offered at our school?  We are looking for pictures of you in action on the lacrosse field, badminton court, crew course, hockey rink, etc!  If you play a unique sport and want to be featured in the yearbook, please pass along a picture or two You can email them to katie.cromie@tka.org or drop off photos in the SAO, attn: Katie Cromie.  Thanks!!

Special Parent Seminar - Tim Galleher, Pastor of Youth and Family Ministries, at Saratoga Federated Church, speaking on "Sticky Faith": Parents, reserve Tuesday, February 26, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. to attend this seminar in the W Building. Pass this flyer on to family and friends!  What makes the difference between graduating seniors who pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith, and those who remain connected to Jesus? What can we do in our families to help junior and senior high school kids develop faith that truly lasts?  Speaker Tim Galleher will share practical ideas you can use immediately in your family to help your kids have lifelong faith.

Summer School for Students with D's or F's: If your student needs to remediate a course because they received a D or F in the first semester, or are currently receiving a D or F, it is time to start locating and enrolling in summer school classes. These classes fill up very quickly and by the time you receive your student’s final report card it will be too late to enroll in most classes. A student who is earning below a “C minus” level in math will not be eligible to advance to the next math level next year. If they repeat the course in summer school with a higher grade, they will be allowed to move on. Colleges usually will not recognize “D” grades in a subject, so your student should consider taking the class over to improve the grade. Summer school should be taken at a fully accredited institution that issues an official transcript. Upon completion of the remediated course, the official transcript should be sent to the Registrar at The King’s Academy for inclusion on the TKA transcript.

TKA Summer School: At this time, TKA anticipates offering the courses below. For questions about TKA summer school, please contact Mr. Matt Nisbet.  Specific dates and pricing will be available soon on the website.

TKA Library Media Center:  We welcome parents of current students to utilize our print books, eBooks, audios/videos, and library online subscriptions.  Please explore library resources by visiting our Library Media Center webpage. From the homepage, click on Academics, then Library Media Center.  For direct access to our library collection, click on Quicklinks, then Library Online Catalog.   Library hours are posted on our website and in the Student/Parent Handbook.  The best time for parents to check out/return library materials is after the last bell of the school day.  We would like to highlight some of the new print books and GVRL eBooks in our library collection:

ACADEMIC AND COLLEGE COUNSELING

Sophomores and Juniors - AP Applications: In order to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses next year, you must fill out an AP Course Student Application form. The forms and AP course descriptions were distributed last week and are due in the SAO by Monday, February 25. Extra forms are available in the Academic and College Counseling office.

College Counseling Appointments for Juniors and Parents: Now is the time for juniors to prepare to meet with their college counselors! Mrs. Threewitt and Mrs. Katter visited the 11th grade English classes to talk with the juniors about beginning their college counseling. Each junior was given a packet containing a checklist and materials describing what must be done to prepare for the first counseling appointment. Juniors, remember that your packet must be completed in order to schedule your appointment. The counselors have plenty of meeting times available now, but it will not be possible for them to meet with everyone if the majority of packets are returned in April and May. You can see the name of your counselor either by coming to the College Counseling Office and looking at the lists posted on Mrs. Threewitt and Mrs. Katter’s doors, or by logging in to your Naviance account and looking at your portfolio via the “about me” page. Please see Mrs. Wadlow if you have not yet set up your Naviance account.

Seniors – Scholarships: There are many scholarships listed in Naviance, such as the PG&E Bright Minds Scholarship. PG&E awards $1 million in scholarships to students who have given back to their local community or who have overcome personal hardships. Go to the scholarship listings in Naviance or www.pge.com/brightminds for more information.

Senior Girls: Each year the Santa Clara Valley section of The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) awards about ten scholarships, primarily on the basis of scholastic achievement, motivation, and interest in engineering demonstrated in the application form. You must be a female high school graduate by August of 2013 and pursuing a BS degree in engineering or computer science and be enrolled by fall in that program. Applications are available at Society of Women Engineers or the College Counseling Office. Deadline is March 30, 2013. Questions: contact Caterina Paun & Erika D. Rodriguez at swe_scv_scholarships@yahoo.com

Summer and Gap Year Opportunities: An extensive list of summer and gap year programs is now available in Naviance (go to the “colleges” tab and then click on “enrichment programs”). Most of the programs listed are supplied by teenlife.com, but the College Counseling staff will also add listings as time permits.
