Library Organization

  • The library collection is organized according to Dewey Decimal Classification

Dewey Decimal Classification  (DDC)

000   Generalities (includes general encyclopedias)
100   Philosophy and Psychology
200   Religion
300   Social Sciences
400   Language (includes dictionaries and thesauri)
500   Natural Sciences and Mathematics
600   Technology (Applied Sciences)
700   The Arts (includes sports and recreation)
800   Literature and Rhetoric (includes classic fiction)
900   History, Geography, and Biography

  • One library section not organized according to DDC is the “F” section
    •  “F” section is a pull-out fiction section from the Dewey 800s (Literature and Rhetoric)

Main Library Sections

  • Reference (R 000 – R 999)
  • Non-reference (000 – 999)
  • Biographies (920s)
  • Fiction – two locations
    • 800s section:  Classic fiction and fiction for upper high school students
    • “F” section:  A-Z by author last name; not separated by genre (Junior High Literature binder is organized by genre and is available in the library)
  • World Languages (FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, KOREAN, LATIN, SPANISH) – world languages dictionaries and Bibles; includes some Spanish-language fiction
  • Multimedia (AUDIO and VIDEO)
  • Parent Library (PARENT)
  • Professional Library (PROF)
  • Print Magazines
    • Current issues in Reference folders near Circulation Desk
    • Older issues in Stacks filed by magazine title, then chronological order
    • See Library Print Subscriptions for list of current print subscriptions
  • Print Indexes in Stacks
    • Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature
    • National Geographic Index
    • American Heritage Index

Spine Labels

  • Except for biographies, the last line on the spine label (call number) is normally the 1st three letters of the author last name
  • For biographies, the last line on the spine label (call number ) is the name of the biography subject (i.e., 926.2 EDISON)

Follett Shelf eBooks

  • Login to the Library Online Catalog using your school computer username and password
  • Click on Catalog tab
  • Click on Follett Shelf left-side tab
  • Check-out and read Follett Shelf eBooks online or download to mobile devices
  • To read Follett Shelf eBooks on mobile devices: Search in App Store for Follett ByteWave K-12 Edition, install, enter FollettShelf URL:, and login with your school computer username and password 

Reference eBooks (Gale Virtual Reference Library)

  • Access through either of two links on the Library Media Center webpage or the Library Online Catalog homepage
    • Reference eBooks (Gale Virtual Reference Library) link -> Click on eBooks image -> Enter library password (distributed by the library to current students and staff) or Proceed
    • Gale Cengage Learning link -> Click on Cengage Learning image -> Enter library password (distributed by the library to current students and staff) or Proceed -> Scroll down and click on Gale Virtual Reference Library
  • Enter search term in Search your library's GVRL holdings field; OR click on Advanced Search; OR under Subjects (left-side of screen), click on subject of interest, enter search term in Search within field, OR
  • Click on individual eBooks, click on articles of interest in Table of Contents tab or Book Index tab
  • Click Print to reformat article before printing
  • Click Citation Tools, MLA or APA, Export to EasyBib, etc.
